This app records children. That is the point of it — the Mandarin you need is the Mandarin spoken in your own kitchen — but it means this page matters more than most. It describes what actually happens, not what sounds reassuring.
The recordings
The sound is never stored. When you record at home, the audio is sent to be turned into text and then discarded in the same request. It is not written to a disk, a bucket or a backup, and there is no copy for us to hand over, lose or be compelled to produce. Nobody, including us, can listen to your child.
What is kept is the text: the transcript, the lines separated by who said them, their English, and a short summary of what the conversation was about. Sentences your family used are added to your phrases so you can practise them.
You can delete any of it, at any time, from the Record tab or from Stats. Deleting removes the transcript, the lines and the phrases it created. It is immediate and it cannot be undone. What survives is a count — that some word has been heard at home a number of times — which holds no sentence, no voice and no name.
Who else sees it
Turning speech into text, and working out who said what, needs services we do not run:
- Cloudflare hosts the app and runs the speech-to-text. Your recording passes through them to be transcribed.
- Cerebras receives the transcript text, to split it into turns and translate it.
- Fish Audio and Cartesia make the spoken audio you hear. They are sent the app's own sentences to read aloud, never your recordings or your family's words.
We do not sell anything to anybody, and nothing here is used to train a model on your family by us.
Your account
Your email address, and your password stored as a hash rather than as a password. One cookie, which only says you are signed in. If you turn on bedtime reminders, the address your browser gives us to deliver them to.
What we do not do
There is no analytics, no tracking pixel, no advertising network and no third-party script of any kind in this app. Nobody is watching you use it. That is unusual enough to be worth stating plainly, and you are welcome to check the page source.
Children
The account is yours, not your child's, and this app is for adults. When you record at home you are consenting on your child's behalf to their speech being transcribed as described above. If you would rather not, the podcast, the phrases and the drills all work without ever recording anything.
Getting it all back, or gone
Ask and we will send you everything held against your account, or delete the account and everything in it. Contact details are on the contact page.
